The roots of Glasgow five-piece post-rock band Mogwai can most readily be found in late-'70s and -'80s post-punk groups like Joy Division, and the Cure, but the bandreaches back to modernist, classical composers such as Erik Satie as well. It combines layered guitar with organs, cellos, electronic devices, and other noise to create textures, concepts, and moods, all while successfully navigating around the traditional verse-chorus-verse structure. It doesn't mean that going to its show will be an isolating, existential meditation unless, of course, that's your thing. Mogwai supports its new album, The Hawk Is Howling, at theGrand Ballroom (1290 Sutter St., San Francisco) on Monday, Sept. 8. 8 p.m., $22.50
