Mirror Made Me

When: March 2-7 2010

Even in a media-glutted era that questions the possibility of selfhood (even ironically), artists are still drawn to scrutinize themselves. The artwork of Aly Su Borst, Ursula Brookbank, Michael Deane, Cybele Lyle, Shana Moulton, and Andrew Wilson go beyond strict self-portraiture, however, venturing into psychology, drama, and even documentary. Photographers Borst and Brookbank use themselves as models posed in cinematic settings or in theatrical costume, while videographers Deane, Lyle, Moulton, and Wilson employ narratives and performers as well as non-naturalistic video effects. The videos of Moulton and Brookbank explore female identity through performance and ritual, while Deane and Wilson explore the construction of the male self in today's cultural hall of mirrors. Lyle's video/installation "The Last Resort" captures the disturbing but compelling ambiance at a Florida biker bar once frequented by Monster serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Mirror Made Me runs through March 7 at Krowswork (480 23rd St., Oakland). 510-229-7035 or Krowswork.com
