Midnight's Children

Rated NR 148 minutes 2012

Nothing less than the history of modern India, from Independence in 1947 to more or less the present day, told via the experiences of two boys switched at birth, one rich and Muslim, the other poor and Hindu — quite the political allegory by Salman Rushdie, who co-adapted the screenplay with director Deepa Mehta from Rushdie’s novel. The playing of Satya Bhabha, as lucky Saleem Sinai, and Shahana Goswami, as his adopted mother, help to guide us through the sprawling family saga, as does Mehta’s extravagant scene-setting (shot on location in Sri Lanka, with reported production complications arising from Rushdie’s notoriety). The result is more of a poignant pageant than a trail of tears, with welcome touches of humor plus vibrant music by Nitin Sawhney. (146 min.)
