According to owner Cecilia Chairez, Mi Zacatecas in East Oakland is the only place in the East Bay that serves Zacatecan cuisine. Chairez is originally from Zacatecas, Mexico and opened the restaurant to showcase the flavors of home. According to Chairez, gorditas are one of the most popular dishes in Zacatecas: thick, and fluffy corn tortillas made fresh to order and stuffed with your choice of filling. Try the pork and cactus stew, typical of her hometown of Valparaíso, or the picadillo, a comforting blend of ground beef and potatoes in a mildly spicy red salsa. The rajas con queso is excellent, too, with stretchy, tangy cheese, lightly grilled peppers, and caramelized onions. The meats like lengua, cabeza, and maciza are steamed for hours and make excellent fillings for the tacos. And on weekends, don’t miss the barbacoa plate, with fork-tender meat simmered overnight and served with gigantic handmade tortillas.
