Metalocalypse

Dethklok, Mastodon, High on Fire and Converge

When: Sat., Nov. 21, 6:30 p.m. 2009

Ask any metal fan what their favorite TV show is, and chances are Metalocalypse ranks high on the list. The animated comedy airing on the Adult Swim channel follows the adventures of the world-famous death metal band Dethklok -- singer Nathan Explosion, Swedish guitarist SkwisgaarSkwigelf (the "fastest guitarist alive"), rhythm guitarist Toki Wartooth (the "second fastest guitarist"), bassist William Murderface, and Pickles the drummer. Besides expertly caricaturing metal acts (like the circular headbanging, facial hair styles, and obsession with dark stuff), Dethklok is also a very decent (and real) band. Written and performed by Metalocalpse co-creator, comedian and trained musician Brendon Small, Dethklok released its first album, Dethalbum, last year, which debuted as the highest charting death metal album ever. With brutally heavy guitar tones and ridiculous Cookie Monster vocals, Dethklok harks back to an old-school sound (bands like Death) with its classic guitar riffs and spot-on drumming. See them with Chimaira and Soilent Green at the Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Thursday, June 5. 8 p.m., $26.50. TheFillmore.com
