Meshell Ndegeocello

When: Sun., Dec. 7, 8 p.m. 2008

Anyone who caught Me'ShellNdegeocello's Spirit Music Tour at Yoshi's a couple years ago can vouch for her talent and powerful stage presence. Not to mention her band features A-List personnel: drummer Chris "Daddy" Dave (of Bilal and Erykah Badu fame), alto saxophonist Oliver Lake, and Lake's son, DJ Sundance, whose crunchy, sample driven beats substituted for drums during Christian McBride's last engagement at Yoshi's.  Ndegeocello has a sultry baritone voice but says that bass is her primary instrument. Her specialty is laying down a bedrock groove that lofts the other band members. In the decade and a half since she began producing records, Ndegeocello went from making a real profound version of what was later called neo-soul, to creating a real bluesy, free-form style of jazz. She'll perform songs from her new album, Dance of the Infidel, this Sunday (Dec. 7th) at the Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd. in San Francisco). 8 p.m. $29.50. The Coup open. - Rachel Swan
