Rock & Pop, All Ages

When: Sat., May 8, 4 p.m. 2010

Oakland probably hasn't seen a metal lineup this noteworthy since Day on the Green. Dubbed "The Missing Link," the one-time show features Mastodon, Between the Buried and Me, High on Fire, Baroness, Priestess, ValientThorr, Black Cobra, and Bison b.c. Metal has come a long way in terms of technical skill, and perhaps no (highly visible) band encapsulates that more than Atlanta's Mastodon. Last year's Crack the Skye was a feat of complexity and arrangements (yet sacrificing no musicality), showing that the cleaner direction the band took on Blood Mountain was entirely worth it. But live is where the album's concepts (involving Rasputin, wormholes, and space) gel -- trippy visuals explain and complement the album, which is played from beginning to end. This show also marks the triumphant homecoming of High on Fire, who've now officially become a household name. Considering this stellar lineup, even the openers should not be missed. At the Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Saturday, May 8. 4 p.m., $35.
