Mary King Takes Over AC Transit

Mary King, a former longtime Alameda County supervisor and fixture in East Bay politics, has been named to be the interim general manager of AC Transit. King replaces outgoing General Manager Rick Fernandez, who resigned earlier this month after some members of the agency's board of directors had grown frustrated with him. King will run AC Transit's day-to-day operations while the board conducts a search for a permanent general manager.

King was hired by Fernandez five years ago and was an assistant general manager in AC Transit's public affairs division. Before that, she was an Oakland lobbyist. Although she had a respectable career in politics, she has no prior experience running a transportation agency. She also is a former Oakland mayoral candidate who was defeated in the 1998 election by Jerry Brown, after she was unable to overcome her association with the ill-fated deal that brought the Raiders back to Oakland.
