Blues, Folk, & Country

Mary Gauthier

When: Sun., Feb. 28, 8 p.m. 2010

Mary Gauthier knows a thing or two about grief and the sordid side of life. She started drinking as a teen, had her first detox at age 15, and was a self-confessed walking disaster until she got sober at 28. She didn't start singing and writing songs until she was almost 40, but the five albums she's made since then are low-key gems full of grim wisdom and stark beauty. Her soft, melodic voice complements the despondent aura of her art, while her acerbic wit drops a shard of light even into her darkest tunes. Gauthier plays Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley). 8:30 p.m., $20.50, $21.50. TheFreight.org
