Mark Knopfler

When: Tue., April 13, 8 p.m. 2010

Mark Knopfler has always followed a low-key and unassuming path to success. Even in the mid-Eighties when his band Dire Straits was arguably one of the biggest bands in the world alongside U2 and the Police, it was all done behind solidly crafted records and relentless touring with nary a controversy nor scandal in sight. So it's been the case since he broke up the group to pursue his own muse in 1995. Since, Knopfler has worked on film soundtracks, collaborated with Emmylou Harris, and quietly amassed an impressive solo canon. Last year's Get Lucky, the native Scotsman's sixth full-length studio outing, bubbles over with an ethereal mix of Celtic, folk, and swamp-rock nuances that make so much of what he composes such tasty fare. The erstwhile Sultan of Swing will be painting these tuneful images, aided by opening act Pieta Brown, on Tuesday, Apr. 13, at the Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland). 8 p.m., $49.50-$99.50.
