When: Thu., Feb. 13, 9 p.m. 2014
Mark Farina is the pioneer of “mushroom jazz,” a down-tempo style of electronic music that melds East Coast hip-hop beats with groovy, West Coast psychedelic vibes. Farina has been perfecting his trademark sound for nearly two decades, releasing compilations of mixes that are organic, soulful, and jazzy — in essence, the absolute antithesis of head-banging, ear-throttling, beat-dropping EDM. He has performed on stages around the world, including at the massive Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, so it’ll be a treat to see him on Thursday at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) — his first-ever performance in Oakland. Opening the show will be J Boogie Dubtronic Science — the band of DJ and producer J Boogie, whose last album, Soul Vibrations, incorporated a horn section and Latin percussionists — as well as DJ heyLove*.
