Marc Carey Focus Trio

When: Thu., June 24, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010

Those who bought Marc Carey's 2006 album Focus know how underappreciated he is in the jazz market. As the name implies, it's an incredibly taut, conceptual album, beginning and ending with the same lick from Jackie McLean's "Appointment in Ghana." It featured three of the best musicians you've never heard of: Carey on keys, accompanied by bassist David Ewell and drummer Sameer Gupta (who alternates between trap set and tabla). Known for patience, Carey is nonetheless an imaginative player and an omnivorous listener. He grew up in DC, played in go-go bands, and backed everyone from songstress Abbey Lincoln to folk rocker AniDiFranco. He'll bring The Focus Trio to OaklandYoshi's (510 Embarcadero) on Thursday, June 24. 8 p.m. ($16) & 10 p.m. ($8). Yoshis.com
