Mamadou & Vanessa

When: Fri., Nov. 16, 9 p.m. 2007

Three very different African and world music acts perform separately and together on Friday at Ashkenaz. The duo Mamadou & Vanessa share the stage with guitar virtuoso Walter Strauss and globetrotting didjeridu master Stephen Kent. MamadouSidibe and his wife Vanessa harmonize and play instrumental duets based on the Wassalou music of his Malian homeland, and for this expand to a sextet with drummers, bass, and accordion. Walter Strauss, well-known musical partner of African kora player MamadouDiabate, this time plays in a trio featuring his innovative fingerstyle guitar and singing. Stephen Kent, whose latest CD, Labyrinths, is a meditative solo didjeridu (Aboriginal Australian wind instrument) recording, takes a more communal approach in this concert where he plays solo, and in various combinations with the other acts. Friday, Nov. 16 at 9 p.m. $15, $10 for students. 510-525-5054 or
