Magic Mouth

When: Wed., Sept. 25, 8 p.m. 2013

When a deep love of Nina Simone gets washed through waves of crunchy garage guitars and loud-driving post-punk spunk, you get a band like Magic Mouth, which has been tearing into Portland, Oregon for the past few years. Originally formed as a two-piece, with Peter Condra on guitar and Ana Margarita on drums, the band expanded in 2011 to include vocalist Chanticleer Tru and bassist Brendan Scott, who helped fill out its genre-breaking, tambourine-shaking sound. Now touring the West Coast in support of its freshly released debut LP, Devil May Care, Magic Mouth will make its first return to San Francisco this week since playing Pride in June. Somewhere between the howling, staccato soul vocals and the dance-inducing sonic orthodontia, you’ll probably find your legs, ass, and shoulders, but I can’t say in which order. At El Rio (3158 Mission St., San Francisco), with Glitterbang and Double Dutchess.
