Madhouse Rhythm

When: Sun., May 25, 8 p.m. 2008

Given the breakout success of Blake Taylor's new book, ADHD & Me: What I Learned from Lighting Fires at the Dinner Table, it's not surprising that, to an increasing degree, the Bay Area's most enterprising "tortured young artists" are turning their mental illnesses into, ahem, "mental skillness." San FranciscoStateUniversity student Joshua Walters recently entered the fray with Madhouse Rhythm, a new hip-hop theater production about having bipolar disorder. This eighty-minute show incorporates beatbox, spoken word, and comedy as a way of representing Walters' experiences, and recasting his illness as armature. Sunday, May 25 at the Jewish Community Center of the EastBay(1414 Walnut St., Berkeley). 8 p.m., $8-$12. JCCEastBay.org
