Made in Dagenham

Rated R 113 minutes 2010

It may look like Norma Rae but it’s English as egg and chips. Sally Hawkins of Happy Go Lucky gets plucky again at the head of a cast of English showoffs, in the story of striking female seamstresses at a Ford auto plant in the title London exurb, circa 1968. Hawkins (as labor militant Rita O’Grady), Bob Hoskins (the shop steward), Daniel Mays (Rita’s hubby), and the girls in the upholstery sweatshop make collective bargaining look like fun, but the screenplay (by William Ivory, based on a true story) never loses sight of the equal-pay issue at the heart of it. Miranda Richardson costars as a sympathetic Labor Party official, and that’s the voice of Danny Huston as the big boss on the phone from Detroit. Directed dutifully by Nigel Cole. (113 min.)
