M. Ward

When: Thu., March 5, 8 p.m. 2009

Maybe it's the blend of sunny '60s pop and country-folk yielded by She & Him, the duo M. Ward formed with actress/singer ZooeyDeschanel last year. Or it could be Ward's own childhood love affair with the sounds of the AM band that manifested itself so brilliantly on 2005's outing Transistor Radio. But whatever the reason may be, the Oregon resident has gotten in touch with his inner Brian Wilson and Phil Spector on his new album Hold Time, crafting a denser sound palette that's considerably more complex than the lo-fi, Fahey-flavored acoustic fingerpicking he made his name with. And while early reports have Ward opening his show by going back to basics with just a guitar and harp, he and his four-piece will end up getting its collective rootsy pop vibe on at the Palace of Fine Arts (3301 Lyon St., San Francisco) on Thursday, March 5. 8 p.m., $29.50.
