Lover's Rock Valentine's Party

When: Sat., Feb. 14, 9:30 p.m. 2009

Reggae legends the Mighty Diamonds -- Donald "Tabby" Shaw, Fitzroy "Bunny" Simpson, and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson -- may be the only close-harmony trio of the late-'60s still performing with all its original members. Their debut album, Right Time, was as powerful and compelling as anything Marley ever cut. Shaw's songwriting is full of the soul and sufferation that's at the heart of all great roots reggae, and his high keening vocals are one of the focal points of the music's golden age. Their harmonies still sound as sweet as ever and they're still going strong thirty years after their international debut. The Yellow Wall Dub Squad, a band led by Jamaican guitar god Fazal Prendergast, will provide the backing riddims when the Mighty Diamonds play Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) on Saturday, Feb. 14. 9:30 p.m., $20.
