We already knew the real life of Deep Throat actress Linda Lovelace, aka Porn Superstar Number One, was no picnic. But co-directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl, The Celluloid Closet and screenwriter Andy Bellin manage to make it slightly boring as well. Dumb, doomed middle-class young Floridian Lovelace, née Linda Boreman (played without nuance by Amanda Seyfried), gets snowed by pimp Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard, with hilarious facial hair), circa 1972, and turned over to the Mob, who make millions on her talent for fellatio while she earns zilch. Wall-to-wall irony with little else to contrast it to, costarring Sharon Stone, Hank Azaria, Chris Noth, Bobby Cannavale, Robert Patrick, and the ubiquitous James Franco, here impersonating Hugh Hefner (92 min.).
