Love Ranch

Rated R 117 min. 2010

Tussle in a cathouse. Based on the true story of the Mustang Ranch, this failed actors’ fiesta pairs Joe Pesci, as a vociferous (what else?) pimp in charge of a Nevada desert brothel, with Helen Mirren as his wife, madam of the Love Ranch, circa 1976. It’s Pesci’s first screen role since The Good Shepherd in 2006, and director Taylor Hackford is content to let him merely recycle his hot-head roles from Casino and Goodfellas. That leaves Mirren (Hackford’s real-life wife) free to steal what’s left of the movie, when a visiting Latin American heavyweight boxer (Spanish actor Sergio Peris-Mencheta) takes a fancy to her and the fur flies. Neither the lousy dialogue nor the cramped-looking shot blocking contribute much to the proceedings, and the Love Ranch girls (Gina Gershon, Bai Ling, et al.) are pretty much what we’d expect. Don’t shoot your wad on this one (117 min.).
