Love & Other Drugs

Rated R 112 minutes 2010

Monumentally ill-conceived romance by director Edward Zwick has a ladies’ man Viagra salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) falling in love with an early-onset Parkinson’s patient (Anne Hathaway) and mending his wild and crazy ways. But not before the randy pharma pusher demonstrates the drug’s effectiveness in numerous sex scenes. What was Zwick (Defiance, Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai) thinking? The flaccid screenplay, adapted by Zwick and two other writers from a book by ex-Viagra rep Jamie Reidy, lurches from crass to pathetic to two-hanky tear-jerky and treats Hathaway and Gyllenhaal like Kleenex. Supporting actors Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria, and Josh Gad fare better because their characters are one-dimensional. If you experience drowsiness, nausea, high blood pressure, temporary blindness, or loss of hearing, it’s still better than sitting through this bomb. (113 min.)
