Lottery Ticket

Rated PG-13 95 minutes 2010

A sneaker-obsessed recent high school grad (played by former child rapper Bow Wow—he’s dropped the "Lil'") has just won a $370 million lottery jackpot. When his grandma inadvertently lets the news slip, everyone in his neighborhood project wants a piece of the action. First-time director Erik White keeps things moving briskly when he’s not bogged down with life lessons for his young protagonist in this otherwise standard comic fare. Bow Wow is earnest if unremarkable in the lead, and the supporting cast brings some gusto to the film. No doubt the characters are stereotypes, but the performances are handled with a knowing wink and a great deal of fun—particularly Mike Epps, who shines as a hammy Little Richard-style preacher. (99 min.)
