Lost Planet Airmen

When: Sat., June 29, 8 p.m. 2019

In the early ’70s, Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen ruled the clubs of Berkeley, doing turn-away business at Mandrake’s, the Longbranch Saloon, and other sadly shuttered San Pablo Avenue hotspots. They also brought their hippie reinvention of country music to The Freight. Five of the band’s core members from those heady days have been reassembled by lead guitarist and frontman Bill Kirchen, for a quick mini-tour of California. Kirchen, “The Master of the Telecaster,” will be joined by fiddler, and Prairie Home Companion regular, Andy Stein; bass player Buffalo Bruce Barlow; rhythm guitarist and Professor of Aerospace Engineering John Tichy; and steel guitar master Bobby Black, who also played with Asleep at the Wheel and backed up George Jones on his early dates for Starday Records. Cody himself will not appear, but for Berkeley residents of a certain age, this reunion is a “must see” event.
