Lorca Hart, one of the Bay Area’s most dependably swinging drummers, leads an all-star quartet featuring a bevy of Los Angeles players too rarely heard in these part. Pianist Josh Nelson is best known as a first-call accompanist for vocalists such as Freda Payne, Alicia Olatuja, Sara Gazarek, and Natalie Cole (with whom he toured for six years), but he’s just as invigorating in instrumental settings. Bassist Edwin Livingston has propelled illustrious ensembles like The Headhunters, Los Hombres Calientes, and The MONK’estra, but the big news is the appearance of tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore. As one of the most acclaimed young players to emerge in the 1980s, he recorded with a series of jazz legends, from Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson to Freddie Hubbard and Bobby Hutcherson. During his 15-year tenure in Kevin Eubanks’ Tonight Show Band from 1995-2010, he seemed to fade from the jazz scene despite his nightly visibility, but the brawny-toned Moore seems to be resurfacing.
