Longs Drugs Bought by Even Bigger Chain

Longs Drug Stores, the Walnut-Creek based regional pharmacy chain that has operated for close to seventy years, has just been bought by the national drug store chain CVS for $9 billion. According to the East Bay Business Times, Longs had faced some hard times in the last few years, as national giants such as CVS had bit into its business. The chain was forced to abandon markets in Oregon and Colorado, and began an effort to modernize its outdated stores, bringing in such services as drive-through windows. Now, company officials have decided to let CVS do the modernizing for them. The chain consists of 521 drug stores in the western United States, with roughly 21,000 employees.
