Long Lost Oakland

When: Wed., April 4, 6 p.m. 2018

East Bay Yesterday podcaster Liam O’Donoghue is collaborating with Front Group Design for a project called Long Lost Oakland, which consists of a podcast mini-series, free events, a walking tour, and a hand-illustrated map. The map shows an Oakland that once existed, but doesn’t anymore. Available for purchase through a Kickstarter campaign, it includes everything from the vanished animals and plants, including the grizzly bear and old growth redwoods, to buildings such as the Piedmont Baths and the Oakland Observatory. But the project isn’t about romanticizing the past; instead, it’s about trying to understand the rapid change Oakland has undergone. To hear more about the stories and extensive research behind the map, check out one of the free presentations O’Donoghue is hosting at bookstores and libraries, the next of which is at the Oakland Public Library.
