When: Wed., Aug. 1, 7 p.m. 2018
For this special evening at Freight & Salvage, nonprofit record label Little Village Foundation will release a series of albums by underground California artists — it’s the third year that Little Village will help local gems — many of them women and people of color singing in their native tongues — gain a national audience. Among the performers are El Cerrito’s Marina Crouse, with her emotional blues sung in Spanish on her debut record, Never Too Soon; Aki Kumar, who blends Bollywood sounds with classic Chicago-style blues on the harmonica player’s second release, Hindi Man Blues; and Ada Pasternak, whose violin-starring debut, Sweet Dreams, functions as a tribute to her parents who escaped persecution as Jews in Russia. Another exciting name on the lineup is Mariachi Mestizo, a youth ensemble based in a small Central Valley farming town that both preserves and modernizes Mexico’s mariachi traditions.
