Once more into the putatively amusing lives of Todd Solondz’s amazingly neurotic characters. Writer-director Solondz’s story is built around three miserable sisters – played by Shirley Henderson, Allison Janney, and Ally Sheedy – but there’s enough discomfiture and self-loathing to go around, especially coming from the Janney character’s Bar-Mitzvah-aged son (Dylan Riley Snyder), who naturally sees right through all the pretense. Solondz evidently views this as a sequel, with an entirely new cast of actors, to his 1998 drama Happiness, but forget about that. Even for Solondz admirers this may be too much of a good thing. Also in the top-heavy cast: Ciaran Hinds, Michael Lerner, Paul Reubens, and Charlotte Rampling, as a hotel cocktail lounge vampire (98 min.).
