Lichi Fuentes

When: Sat., March 8, 8 p.m. 2008

One of the most expressive singers in the Bay Area, Chilean-born Lichi Fuentes celebrates International Women's Day with a concert Saturday, March 8, at La Pena Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). Fuentes is a founding member of GrupoRaiz, the band of exiles who met in Berkeley following the military coup in their Chilean homeland. She has long directed the La Pena Community Chorus, and has dedicated her music to songs calling for a world based on freedom and justice. For this concert she sings mostly folk-based nuevacancion (Latin American new song), playing a variety of instruments, joined by Hugo Wainzinger, Raul Ramirez, and Jonathan Alford, and other musician friends including Fuentes' partner in the children's music group Colibri, Alisa Peres. 8 p.m., $12, $14, LaPena.org or 510-849-2568.
