Lemon Tree

2009

The striking Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass (The Visitor) stars in this ironic 2008 melodrama, as a widow whose humble citrus groves make global headlines. When the Israeli minister of defense builds a house next door, just across the Green Line that separates the West Bank from Israel, her orchards are declared a security threat, but she finds an ally (and unlikely suitor) in the media-savvy lawyer (Ali Suliman of Paradise Now) who takes her protest to the Israeli courts. Director Eran Riklis is best known here for The Syrian Bride (2004), and like that film, this follow-up reveals a certain amount of empathy with women, showing how the heroine is undermined by her own patriarchal community. The two Israelis who take her side are female, which underscores the film's message: a little less machismo might save a lot more than trees. In Hebrew and Arabic with subtitles (106 min.).
