When: Sat., March 15, 8 p.m., Sun., March 16, 5 p.m., Fri., March 28, 8 p.m. and Sun., March 30, 2 p.m. 2008

Berkeley Opera opens its 29th season with Donizetti's popular comic opera L'Elisird'Amore ("The Elixir of Love"), sung in the original Italian with English supertitles. Based on a French opera by Daniel Auber from just a year earlier in 1831 (Le Philtre), Felice Romani's libretto hinges on a country bumpkin hoodwinked by a con artist's supposed love potion. (Ah, those simpler times of 1832 -- these days stuff like that floods our e-mail inboxes automatically.) Robert Weinapple directs, with musical direction by guest conductor Donato Cabrera. March 15 through March 30 at the JuliaMorganCenter for the Arts (2640 College Ave., Berkeley) or 925-798-1300.
