Blues, Folk, & Country

Leftover Salmon

When: Fri., Feb. 12, 9 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 13, 9 p.m. 2010

Leftover Salmon is one of the nation's premier jam bands, a six-man combo that blends the best Americana impulses with its own jazzy brand of improvisation. After humble beginnings as a Cajun-flavored bluegrass band, the Salmons quickly evolved their own hard-to-define sound by mixing Cajun, zydeco, bluegrass, funk, Southern rock, Latin music, country, singer/songwriter, and reggae into a free-flowing, often improvised presentation that has made them one of the most unique and surprising bands in the land. The Salmons celebrated their 20th year on the road last year, and they continue to win fans with an energetic show that stays rooted in their love of bluegrass even as they trip off to explore outer, and inner, space. Leftover Salmon plays Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $29.50. APEConcerts.com
