Once upon a dark time in American history -â 1925, to be exact -â the idea of a professional football league sounded more like the setup to a joke than something the average Joe had any desire to pay to watch. Thatâs the setup to Leatherheads, a screwball comedy directed by and starring George Clooney as Dodge Connelly, star and captain of the Duluth Bulldogs. Heâs willing to do anything to legitimize his sport and keep it alive, while reporter Lexie Littleton (Renee Zellweger) will do anything to shatter the image of Connellyâs new star player, war hero Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski). The cinematic throwback gets some chuckles, but fails to update the comedy sub-genre for modern tastes (114 min.).
