Le Quattro Volte

Rated NR 88 minutes 2010

Earthy and artfully spare, filmmaker Michelangelo Frammartino’s “doctored documentary” about a southern Italian village follows along beside an ailing goatherd and his flock while also keeping an eye on the village’s ritualistic charcoal-making process. That may sound tedious, but writer-director Frammartino’s visual playfulness and the primitive beauty of the setting combine to cast a definite spell. Did we mention that there’s virtually no dialogue? That’s another plus. (88 min.)
