Le Joli Mai

Rated NR 124 minutes 1963

French filmmaker Chris Marker (La Jetée) puts his subjective, whimsical stamp on the “city symphony” category of documentaries with this offbeat portrait of Paris and her citizens – including a merchant who complains about his life, a young immigrant from Dahomey, war veterans at a ceremony with President Charles de Gaulle, a taxi driver who paints fine art, a man with a spider in his suit, and a cat outfitted in eccentric feline fashions. English narration by Simone Signoret, with a song by Yves Montand and music by Michel Legrand. Penetrates to the Parisian soul. Restored under the guidance of cinematographer Pierre Lhomme in 2013 (145 min.).
