Le Havre

Rated NR 103 minutes 2011

Finnish international filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki revisits France for a gentle fable about a humble shoeshine man named Marcel Marx (André Wilms) coming to the aid of a young African refugee named Idrissa (Blondin Miguel), who arrives in the title seaport city in a cargo container on his way to rejoin his mother in London. Less a “Recession Special” topical drama than a movie-conscious ode to Italian Neo-Realism and French films of the 1930s, Kaurismäki’s vision of working-class solidarity encompasses not only sympathetic Marcel but his ailing wife (Kati Outinen), most of the neighbors, and even a police detective (Jean-Pierre Darroussin). Bite-sized but totally satisfying. (103 min.)
