Last Flag Flying

Rated R 124 minutes 2017

The convergence of filmmaker Richard Linklater; actors Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne; and the story of three aging Vietnam War buddies reuniting to bury one of their sons (a casualty of the Iraq conflict), produces a remarkably organic portrait of America, with heartbreaks and realistic camaraderie intact. The screenplay, by Linklater and Darryl Ponicsan from the latter’s novel, is more or less a sequel to another Ponicsan adaptation, the 1973 buddy movie The Last Detail. The country is somehow a bleaker place today than it was then, and Linklater lets us see that with his usual light, semi-ironic, but empathetic touch. Acting, writing, and direction of high quality. Costarring Cicely Tyson, Yul Vazquez, and Deanna Reed-Foster. Recommended (124 min., 2017, rated R)
