When: Fri., July 17, 8 & 10 p.m., Sat., July 18, 8 & 10 p.m. and Sun., July 19, 2 & 7 p.m. 2009

Pianist and bandleader Larry Harlow is one of the founding fathers of New York's salsa scene. He led the house band at Fania Records, the most important salsa record label, and played on many of the label's seminal albums. He was Fania's top producer, working on more than 100 records for the label and created the Fania All Stars to educate the mainstream about Latin music. Harlow doesn't get out to the West Coast very often so this is definitely a "don't miss" gig. He's bringing along some of New York's top salseros including timbale ace Bobby Sanabria, Ray Martinez, who's played bass for Mongo Santamaria and David Byrne, sax man Frank Fontaine (Celia Cruz/Maria Carey), and many more. Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends play at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero W., Oakland) on Friday, July 17, 8 & 10 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 8 & 10 p.m. and Sunday, July 19, 2 & 7 p.m., $18-$24.
