Labelle

When: Fri., Jan. 30, 8 p.m. 2009

Labelle may have come out of the conservative era of '60s girl groups, but by the time the early '70s rolled around, Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash were ably bridging David Bowie's world of Ziggy-era glam-rock with sweaty funk, soul, and gospel-fueled brio. While it took the trio three decades-plus to reconvene for last year's surprisingly solid Back to Now, the results were far from a mere money-grab as Labelle hooked up with legendary production duo Gamble & Huff plus retro-rocker Lenny Kravitz on a reunion project that includes the civil rights anthem "Dear Rosa." In this new era of Obama, expect this sexy threesome to be raising the roof considerably at the Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland) on Friday, Jan. 30.8 p.m., $50-95.50. ParamountTheatre.com
