When: Sat., June 14, 8 p.m. 2008
As with nearly everything Berkeley's grass-roots activist La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave.) does, the music is always evolving. Thus, La Peña marks its 33rd birthday on Saturday, June 14, with the premiere performance of a work-in-progress, "La Peña -- Ayer, Hoy y P'alante," a musical suite composed by acclaimed jazz-world trombonist Wayne Wallace with libretto by Aya de Leon, performed by the La Peña International Orchestra. Wallace incorporates the musical styles of various cultures that share La Peña into a single work that unites American blues and jazz, Latin American folk and nuevacanción, Arab, Caribbean, and even hip-hop. Orchestra members include Wallace and de Leon, Lichi Fuentes, Ron Stallings, Linda Tillery, Rafael Manriquez, SaedMuhssin, and others. 8 p.m., $12, $14. LaPena.org or 510-849-2568.
Price: $12, $14
