Frederick Wiseman, the legendary cinema-verité documentarian who made such landmark docs as High School, Welfare, and Public Housing, takes his fly-on-the-wall camera to the Opera Garnier in Paris to observe rehearsals and performances of seven different productions by the opera’s famous ballet, as well as classes at the ballet school. Even non-ballet-fans will be amused and intrigued by the dancers and their handlers. And, true to his social-crusading form, veteran commentator Wiseman doesn’t forget to show a benefactors’ reception, as well as a meeting of the dancers’ benefit-system administrators. Even sugar plum fairies have to make a living (159 min.).
