Fractured fairy tale features the title character, a seriously delusional Tokyo office worker (played by Rinko Kikuchi), on a quixotic quest to find buried treasure in snowy Minnesota, guided by an old VHS tape of the Coen brothers’ Fargo and her own pathetic logic. Keyed by actress Kikuchi’s pitch-perfect portrayal, another pair of creative brothers – director David Zellner and writer Nathan Zellner – takes a potentially tragic scenario and weaves it into something resembling a brave fable of the unconquerable human spirit. Or an ironic narrative treatise on the power of wishful thinking, take your pick. David Zellner costars as a sympathetic but dumb deputy sheriff, with Shirley as a kindly North Country widow. The flavor is odd and completely irresistible (105 min.).
