Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop

In the last three months, Oakland rapper Kreayshawn went from being a nobody to absolute megastar status. She's now one of the most overexposed hip-hop stars in the universe, enjoying a lucrative deal with Columbia, tapped to direct a video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers (though the idea was ultimately scrapped), having Twitter feuds with Odd Future emcee Hodgy Beats, and chatting on the phone with her new BFF, Aubrey "Drake" Graham. To top it all off, she's nominated for an MTV "Best New Artist" award. Supposedly it all came about by happenstance, after her "Gucci Gucci" video went viral and caught the attention of an A&R bigwig -- though some would also argue that Kreayshawn had a couple smart managers behind her. At any rate, she's a fascinating new phenomenon. "Gucci Gucci" found favor partly because of its clever lyrics (which managed to be self-aggrandizing, while dissing hip-hop consumerism), and partly because of its rumbly, visceral beat. Kreayshawn graces Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Aug. 25. 9 p.m., $20.
