KPIG Presents: Kinky Friedman

Kinky Friedman

When: Fri., July 30, 9 p.m. 2010

Kinky Friedman and his band, The Texas Jewboys, laid waste to the world of country music in the early '70s, with satirical songs that turned the music inside out and won him as many enemies as friends. In the '80s he retired to write detective novels likeKill Two Birds and Get Stoned. He ran on the independent ticket for Texas governor in 2006. Friedman has since left the political arena, but he still pursues music and creative writing with equal fervor. This week, he'll combine those interests, reading from his novels and performing hits like "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore" and "Asshole From El Paso." His stripped--down trio will include Little Jewford and Washington Ratso. Friedman performs Friday, July 30 at Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $30. GAMH.com
