When: Fri., May 13, 9 p.m. 2011
As the son of Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti had some big shoes to fill. Femi's music may be built on the foundation of Fela's polyrhythmic jams, but he adds to the mix by blending in the modern beats of American and European club cultures, as well as R&B and hip-hop. The result honors his father's work while presenting his own vision of a global pop sound that remains politically charged and danceable. The Positive Force may be one of the hardest working bands on the planet, to plagiarize a phrase. At Bimbo's 365 Club (1025 Columbus Ave., San Francisco) Friday, May 13. 9 p .m., $30.
