Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop

Kofy Brown Band

When: Sat., July 28, 8:30 p.m. 2018

The lineup at this Saturday night’s Ivy Room show is stacked — three local bands, all fronted by or entirely comprised of women of color. Kofy Brown Band is a mainstay in the East Bay as well as nationally, having toured worldwide for over 20 years and originally being based in Washington, D.C. The band’s sound is a blend of funk, rock, blues, and hip-hop, with frontwoman Kofy Brown’s soothing spoken-word vocals tying it all together. Also performing is Shelley Doty X-Tet, a soulful singer and skilled guitarist who plays rock with a jazz attitude, backed by a varying lineup of musicians known as the X-tet. Finally, come early to catch The Onyx, an all-Black, all-female collective that draws from R&B, funk, rock, and Latin influences as well as their diverse geographical backgrounds to make music as beautiful and strong as their name’s gemstone.
