Kitty Pryde

When: Fri., Nov. 9, 10 p.m. 2012

Of all the words that have been used recently to describe rapper Kitty Pryde, the best is probably "polarizing." A quick viewing of one of her videos, say, "Okay, Cupid" instantly elucidates the weird contrast she represents -a mix of trashy and innocent, a high school age-looking white girl (though she actually refuses to say how old she is as part of her hype strategy) in a scene dominated by black men. It's all part of what simultaneously attracts people to - or repels them from - Kitty Pryde. She's not a technically gifted rapper, judging from her lyrics and delivery, but there is something to her slow and confessional style, born from bedroom recordings of songs she uploaded to YouTube on a lark, aware of how shitty they sounded. Amid the haters was an audience who found her to be weirdly charming, including A$AP Rocky producer Beautiful Lou. Pryde performs at DNA Lounge (375 Eleventh St., San Francisco) on Friday, Nov. 9. 10 p.m. $10, $13.
