Neighbor Lady Community Arts Project (NLCAP) in collaboration with Kitchen Sink magazine, is pleased to announce Bittersweet 16, a party to celebrate – with a dash of eulogizing sadness — the close of KS’ fourth and final volume, and to raise money to print an expanded last issue.

Plus rad raffle prizes from Amoeba Records, the Believer, and local artisans; drink specials; and other special fun stuff, yet to be determined!!

Four-time Best of the Bay winner Kitchen Sink is a non-profit, quarterly print magazine that explores thought, art, culture, identity and politics. It is the premiere program of the Neighbor Lady Community Arts Project (501 c3), an Oakland-based arts organization. The shuttering of the Independent Press Association dealt a mortal blow to the Utne award-winner’s ability to continue publishing, but, instead of meekly fading away, Kitchen Sink is determined to go out with a bang – a juicier-than-ever issue and a series of benefit parties and events to lend the end of the project a certain savory sweetness.

About the performers:
The Conspiracy of Beards, based in San Francisco, CA, is a 30-member acapella male choir performing exclusively the songs of Leonard Cohen. Inspired by late artist Peter Kadyk and directed by Daryl Henline, the group performs gritty, uplifting renditions of Cohen’s songs. Started in June 2003 by Daryl Henline and Patrick Kadyk, the group has performed to enthusiastic audiences around the San Francisco Bay Area including most recently appearances at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Cafe du Nord, and on the national radio program West Coast Live. Upcoming projects include a CD release and a European tour. http://conspiracyofbeards.com/

Pillows is a duo from Oakland, CA. Julia Shirar (guitar, drums, sound effects, and vocals) and Jessica Cowley (guitar, drums, bass and vocals) have played as Pillows for three years. They released their first recording, Two Step, on Show and Tell Music on February 28, 2006. They began recording their second effort in late September and hope to release it in early 2007. While all that goes on, they are touring around the greater West Coast, writing songs and, when home, watching Caltrans build a new bay bridge. Their personal music influences include: the Texas plains, broken-down city landscapes, Roberta Flack, old musicals, love, death, crop dusters, Blondie, Molly Hatchet, road trips, the Velvet Underground, and shitty cars with broken stereos. http://pillowsmusic.com/

Michael Zapruder’s Fall 2006 stint as a rider on the soon-to-be-legendary Wave Books Poetry Bus has generated a dozen or two poetry vs. song collaborative pieces, some of which Michael will perform in New York in April at the Poetry Society of America’s New American Poetry Festival. Michael is recording the pieces in his Oakland basement studio this Spring. Look for a series of 7″ releases starting soon. http://www.michaelzapruder.com/

Uni and Her Ukelele joined forces 3 years ago this Christmas… Their mission: Write songs with magical powers overload the senses with glitter and colorful ribbons and bows become the greatest and most glorious opening act EVER!!! Create new and improved Christmas songs and take the unicorns back from the hipsters! Uni and her Ukelele’s Debut album “My Favorite Letter is U” is out NOW and available on CDBaby. http://www.unicornbread.com/

Born in Chico, raised up at Burning Man, and brought to urban fruition in Oakland’s Mosswood Park and Lower Bottoms, the Loyd Family Players take the pulse of traditional Brazilian samba and twist it into a loud, sweaty, sexy muss that’s all their very own. The ten-to-twenty-person coed percussion performance troupe swipes elements from hip-hop, dancehall, punk rock, drum n’bass, summer camp … anything goes. With members hailing from such exotic locales as England, Brazil, Rome, Peru, Antarctica, St. Louis, and Long Island, the Loyds are a foxy, unstoppable (and unstoppably foxy) dance machine. http://www.theloydfamilyplayers.com/
