Gospel & Vocal

Kim Burrell

When: Fri., Nov. 19, 7:30 p.m. 2010

There are few gospel singers performing today who invest their material with as much technical virtuosity and spiritual passion as does Kim Burrell. The Houston vocalist's uncanny combination of churchy curlicues and jazzy scats has helped make her a favorite in the gospel music community, as well as a duet partner of such secular artists as George Clinton, R. Kelly, and Stevie Wonder. Harry Connick Jr., who featured Burrell on four of his recordings, has said, "If she's not the greatest musical mind I've ever been around, she's certainly up at the top of the list." She appears Friday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Beebe Memorial Cathedral (3900 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). $30-$35 ExperienceBMC.org
