Killer Elite

Rated R 105 minutes 2011

The Killer Elite was one of Sam Peckinpah’s worst movies, but even that 1975 dud was better than this. Director Gary McKendry’s similarly titled international spyboiler is reportedly based on a true story of inter-agency rivalry run amok in 1980 Britain and claims no relation to the Peckinpah film, but borrows some of the same motifs. To call those motifs tired would be doing them a favor. Clive Owen, Jason Statham, Robert De Niro, and seemingly dozens of other guys run around stabbing, shooting, and punching each other over an oil sheikh’s vengeance lust. And so on and so forth. They’re all bad guys. Picks up in the second half with some fine action work, but by then it’s too late. The sorry screenplay is by McKendry and Matt Sherring, from a novel by Ranulph Fiennes (100 min.)
